Our Department of Art and the Runnels Gallery is proud to offer the fourth annual High School Art & Design Festival beginning on Thursday, April 16–18, 2020. The two and a half day festival begins at noon on April 16 and will feature a variety of creative, hands-on workshops in visual art and graphic design, and a juried art and design exhibition.

If you are a high school senior planning to pursue a degree in visual art or graphic design you have the opportunity to participate in a portfolio review where you can earn an ENMU art scholarship.

Who Can Attend?

If you are a high school student or art educator, you qualify to participate. You are welcome to attend individually or as a school group.

Teacher/Parent Registration Fee:

First two teacher/parent registrations for each student group are free; $20 fee for each additional teacher/parent

Portfolio Review and Scholarship Competition

High school seniors may participate in the portfolio review and scholarship competition on the last day of the festival. Senior artists are asked to present four to six of their highest-quality works before a faculty panel. Faculty will review the portfolios and provide participants with comments. Seniors should consider the following:

  • Choose your strongest four to six pieces. If possible, consult with your art and design instructor about which of your pieces best showcases your technical, creative and conceptual abilities.
  • Remember, how you present your portfolio says as much about you as does your work. Research ahead of time and consult with your instructor about how best to build your physical portfolio.
  • Write a short description for each of your pieces that explains your process, the materials you used, your concept, the goal of the project, etc.
  • Be able to speak knowledgably about your work using proper art terms when possible.
  • Dress the part. A professional image suggests you are serious about your work.

Student and Faculty Juried Exhibition

Students and faculty attending the festival may submit their personal artwork for the juried student and faculty art exhibition. A panel will review all works submitted and select the highest-ranked pieces for a one-day show on Friday, April 17, 2020.

Pieces selected for the student exhibition will compete for best of show, second place and third place. Pieces selected for the faculty exhibition will compete for the best of show award. The exhibition may include all media types, however, participants may submit only one art piece.

Entry deadline is Tuesday, April 14, 5 p.m. MST.

Artists selected for inclusion in the exhibition will be notified by email, no later than 10 a.m., MST, Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Suggested Presentation Ready Standards for Artwork Selected for Exhibition

All work must be finished at the time of delivery. Suggested presentation standards include:

Submitted Two-Dimensional Work

  • Work should; be matted, framed, and must; be properly wired in a professional manner. Suggested frame colors are white, black or silver. Suggested matte colors are white, black, charcoal, or any shade of gray. Secure wire hanging or French cleats only, no saw tooth hardware permitted.
  • Paintings with large wooden stretchers with painted canvas overlap do not require framing.
  • Dry mounting to foam/gatorboard with imagery flush (bleed off) to all four edges acceptable; no framing/matting required. Secure wire hanging or French cleats only, no saw tooth hardware permitted

Submitted Three-Dimensional Work

  • Work must be stable.
  • Work requiring special/custom stands for presentation must be provided by the artist at time of delivery.

Meal times will be built into the schedule of workshops and activities. You can enjoy on campus dining options including the Crossroads Café Dining Hall in the Campus Union (CUB). Prices do not include sales tax; for tax exemption please bring your Tax Exempt Number to the dining hall at time of purchase.
